Kasaï-Oriental Governor Jean-Paul Mbwebwa Kapo announced plans for a trading center for artisanal copper miners in Katende, in Miabi territory. The project is intended to make mineral sales easier and improve mining conditions as miners struggle to find buyers for their production. Kapo also said a provincial decree would establish operating rules for the sector and promote a fair distribution of revenue. During a visit to the Matshia mine, he heard that the site already employs 150 young people and that its manager is seeking a water well.
