Lagos Assembly approves State Police Bill

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday approved Nigeria’s Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, joining 24 other state legislatures and clearing the way for it to be submitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent. Adopted by voice vote, the bill includes a proposal to establish federal and state police services. Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa called the reform long overdue but said the framework still leaves excessive control over state policing with the federal government.

Tanzania’s jailed opposition leader Tundu Lissu ends brief hunger strike

Tundu Lissu, leader of Tanzania’s main opposition party, CHADEMA, has ended a brief hunger strike after prison authorities allowed him to meet privately with his lawyers. He began refusing food on Monday after his lawyers were denied access to the prison where he is held. His lawyer Rugemeleza Nshala said Lissu skipped his tea, breakfast and lunch, then ended the strike after lunchtime. Lissu’s detention and alleged abductions of government critics have drawn scrutiny of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s human rights record.

Haut-Katanga: FARDC seize an arsenal at Mai-Mai camps

The FARDC recovered about 20 weapons, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, grenades, rockets, arrows, a generator and communications equipment from camps attributed to the Mai-Mai Bakata Katanga in Haut-Katanga. The commander of the FARDC’s 2nd Defense Zone presented the seized equipment to interim governor Martin Kazembe Shula on October 26. The operation comes amid persistent insecurity in Mitwaba territory, where Mai-Mai incursions and attacks have killed people, including 10 in the August 2026 attack at Kyubo Mamba.
