South Kivu: Deteriorating RN2 isolates Mwenga and drives up prices, civil society warns

The RN2 road linking Bukavu, Walungu, Mwenga, Kamituga and Kitutu has been badly deteriorated for several months, with muddy sections stranding vehicles in Kibumba, Muzombo, Munzele, Mungombe, Kipori, Kakulu, Kibanda and Bilembo. The traffic disruption is impeding deliveries of food, medicine, fuel and construction materials to Mwenga and pushing up the cost of living. In a 29 October 2026 appeal to national authorities, the Citizens’ Parliament for Democracy and Good Governance, known as “Baraza la Raiya,” warned of an “accessibility crisis.” Its national president, Romuald Amani Lwamba, said the road’s condition also obstructs the evacuation of patients to Bukavu and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
