South Africa: Pride amid threats to LGBTQ+ rights

Hundreds of people marched on Saturday in Sandton, Johannesburg, for Pride, carrying rainbow flags and banners supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Patrick Smit-Stachowski, who has attended the march since the 1990s, came to support transgender people, saying their rights are under threat in several parts of the world, including the United States. Queer activist Noxolo Maseko described Pride as a rare opportunity to celebrate openly and draw attention to the difficulties LGBTQ+ people face in other African countries.
