Mauritius lifts curfew imposed amid wave of violent protests

Mauritius’s government lifted the nighttime curfew on Monday, saying the situation had evolved favourably. Protests began the previous week over water shortages and the rising cost of living, then escalated after a police officer shot and seriously wounded a woman on Saturday. At least 188 people were arrested on charges including looting, arson, damage to police stations and possession of explosives. The officer who shot the woman was arrested and brought to court.
