MSF to close its Elikya Ebola treatment centre in Bunia on October 31

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) will close its Elikya Ebola treatment centre in Bunia on October 31; the centre opened in early June and has about 100 beds. It has treated 572 confirmed cases and is no longer admitting new patients, who are being referred to Bunia’s four other operational treatment centres. MSF says local capacity is sufficient to continue care and will redeploy its emergency teams to other affected areas. Although more than two weeks have passed without a newly confirmed case in Niania, Mambasa territory, transmission remains active elsewhere, and MSF urges people to maintain prevention measures and report suspected cases promptly.

Rajaa Ghirsan, a 50-year-old seamstress in Sanaa, has vocal cord paralysis and severe larynx complications; a device around her neck helps her breathe and must be replaced every two months at a cost of $100. Sanaa airport, the main air link for people in the Houthi-controlled north, was closed to commercial traffic by the Saudi-led coalition in 2016; limited flights resumed under a 2022 truce, but Israeli attacks in 2025 damaged the airport and destroyed aircraft. Her daughter, Nouran al-Salawi, says Ghirsan is waiting for the operation that could free her from the device, while fearing she may die before receiving it.
