COP17 on Biodiversity and COP31 on Climate: Two Global Meetings to Protect the Planet

The UN’s COP17 on biodiversity is taking place in Yerevan, Armenia, from October 19 to 30, 2026, followed by COP31 on climate in Antalya, Türkiye, from November 9 to 20. The conferences aim to strengthen international cooperation in response to climate change and accelerating biodiversity loss. COP17 is assessing progress under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in 2022, which includes targets to restore 30% of degraded ecosystems and conserve 30% of land, inland waters and marine areas by 2030. Delegates are also expected to identify delays and strengthen resources to protect species threatened by human activities.

Kamoa Copper inaugurates 60 MW of solar power with storage, a model for decarbonizing mining

Kamoa Copper SA inaugurated two solar plants paired with battery storage, providing 60 MW of continuous baseload electricity to the Kamoa-Kakula mining complex in partnership with CrossBoundary Energy and Green World Energie. The ceremony was attended by Water Resources and Electricity Minister Aimé Sakombi Molendo, presidential special envoy Isabelle Kibassa, and Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka Saini, among other officials. CrossBoundary Energy’s installation includes 233 MW-peak of solar panels and 526 MWh of storage; it is expected to generate at least 300,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually and avoid more than 78,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. Kamoa Copper says the power will keep essential operations running after sunset while reducing the carbon footprint of its copper production.
