Nigeria Customs Seeks Review of N1.68tn in Import Duty Waivers

Nigeria Customs chief Bashir Adeniyi called for a review of import duty concessions granted in 2024 and valued at N1.68 trillion, to assess whether they meet their economic aims or unnecessarily deprive the government of revenue. Speaking at a lecture at the University of Ibadan, he said Customs collected N7.28 trillion in 2025, exceeding its target, and about N4.03 trillion in the first half of 2026. He also noted that import duties contribute to the Federation Account, which is shared among Nigeria’s three tiers of government.

The letter also cites an additional 41,000 CFA francs for another transfer and says measures secured through appeals to customs and the transport ministry did not last.
