Nigeria: Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project threatens environment

Nigeria's Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project is controversial for environmental and social reasons. In Akwa Ibom state, the road cuts through Stubbs Creek forest, a protected area with threatened species. The project is estimated to generate 3.5 million tons of CO2, converting the forest from a carbon sink to a carbon source. Local resident Wasi said many coconut trees were destroyed along the ocean side.

Authorities said monitoring and enforcement activities will continue to ensure compliance and prevent recurrence of environmental infractions.
