No vaccine or specific treatment for Ebola strain detected in Nigeria, WHO says

Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in Abuja, caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which the WHO says there is no vaccine or specific treatment. The patient arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on October 3 aboard Ethiopian Airlines flight ET333 from Uganda, and was treated at a private hospital before being transferred to an isolation facility. Authorities have identified 44 close contacts and begun contact-tracing. Uganda has requested the patient’s travel and clinical records, while both houses of Nigeria’s National Assembly called for emergency funding and mandatory screening at entry points.

Uganda said she had travelled to eastern DRC before transiting through Uganda, but the WHO and African health authorities said they had no confirmed information about travel to the DRC; the Swiss government believes she contracted the disease in Uganda. The outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people in the DRC, while Uganda, which had cases earlier this year, has been declared Ebola-free.

Idris tasked public media and the National Orientation Agency with sharing verified information, including prevention messages in Nigerian languages and outreach through community, traditional and religious leaders. He urged Nigerians to remain calm, rely on official sources and avoid spreading unverified claims on social media.
