NSCDC Suspends Officer over Abuja Market Shooting, Orders Trial

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) suspended Deputy Superintendent of Corps Onoja Babayo Samuel, who was arrested by Federal Capital Territory police after allegedly firing into the air during a confrontation at Kubwa Market in Abuja on October 25. NSCDC Commandant General Ahmed Abubakar Audi ordered an internal Orderly Room Trial to determine the officer’s culpability. Witnesses cited by Vanguard said the incident began with a dispute between the officer’s female acquaintance and a butcher, before unidentified young men allegedly confronted him. The NSCDC said the shooting violated its rules of engagement and procedures, and that the disciplinary proceedings’ outcome would be made public.
