Obituary: The tragic end of Matar Diop, former detainee from political protests

Matar Diop, aged 18, was buried in Touba after his death. Arrested in February 2023 alongside Serigne Assane Mbacké, he was held at Diourbel prison amid Senegal’s political tensions. His death follows those of other former detainees, including Mamadou Baldé, Pape Mamadou Seck and Djiby Mbaye. The CODEPS says several deaths are linked to illnesses contracted or worsened in prison and is calling for better medical, psychological and social support for people released from detention.
