Over 90 Families Evacuated from Nairobi Apartment Building on County Orders

Nairobi County ordered the immediate evacuation of a 10-storey apartment building on Kabiria Road in Riruta after inspectors found serious structural defects and extensive cracks. About 90 families were displaced, with some tenants saying they had little time to leave and had to abandon belongings under police supervision. The county declared the property dangerous on October 31, citing violations of planning rules and the building code, and ordered the structure demolished. The evacuation comes as rescue teams continue searching for at least 11 people trapped after an 18-storey building collapsed in Eastleigh on October 23.

Ebola and disinformation: JED’s annual report highlights challenges facing media in the DRC

In Kinshasa, the NGO Journaliste en danger (JED) presented its 2026 annual report on Ebola rumors and disinformation and the pressures facing media in the DRC. The report says the health crisis, violence, public mistrust and media-sector precarity make access to reliable information more difficult and can delay care and hinder epidemic surveillance. Declared on May 15, 2026, the country’s seventeenth Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, had recorded 8,978 confirmed cases, 4,336 deaths and 2,356 recoveries across seven provinces by October 10. JED cites the June 30 burning of the Bafwabongo treatment center in Nia-Nia, which led two confirmed patients and seven suspected cases to flee.

Bingerville: Gbaka buses violating fares sanctioned as apprentices decry pressure on their earnings

On 2 November 2026, Bingerville’s municipal authorities launched a fare inspection operation in Fêh Kessé, led by deputy mayor for transport Diomandé Mamadou Dibo. Gbaka buses charging 500 CFA francs for a trip to Nouveau Goudron—sometimes without passengers knowing the fare before boarding—were stopped or made to drop off and refund their passengers. Passenger Doloresse Coulibaly welcomed the intervention but said the urgency of getting to work can leave riders paying more. Apprentices and drivers said fuel, stops and payments demanded along the route eat into their earnings; Dibo urged them to report alleged abuses by law-enforcement officers.
