Behind the Palace: President Bassirou Diomaye Faye Faces a New Dilemma

Senegal’s National Assembly rejected the 2026 revised finance bill by 109 votes to 20, with three abstentions, ending its examination. The proposal projected budget resources of 5,848.7 billion CFA francs and a deficit of 1,735.2 billion, or 7.6% of GDP, while energy subsidies rose to 790.3 billion. Economy Minister Cheikh Diba said President Bassirou Diomaye Faye would take the necessary steps to implement key measures, but the president must decide whether to resume dialogue, act through administrative means, or eventually consider dissolution. The bill also protected investment spending, allocated 300 billion CFA francs to clear domestic arrears, and provided 70 billion for targeted social transfers.

The group said its conveners, including Jack Tilley-Gyado and Simon Shango, and its candidates for the national and state assemblies were listed without authorisation. It also objected to Governor Hyacinth Alia chairing the council while Akume was listed only as a member, and accused Alia’s administration of sidelining established party structures since the 2023 elections. The alliance said it remains committed to mobilising support for Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election and for APC candidates recognised by Akume.

At the forum’s 2026 National Youth Day celebration, coordinator Olamide Odumosu urged critics, including Deji Adeyanju, to support their claims with verifiable evidence and pursue constructive engagement. The forum credited Audi with improvements in professionalism and operational capacity, including protecting oil and gas facilities, electricity installations and telecommunications infrastructure. It also urged young Nigerians to support security agencies and endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
