The Plateau State House of Assembly endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment to establish federal and state police services in Nigeria. Lawmakers adopted recommendations from an ad hoc committee chaired by Professor Theodore Bala Maiyaki, who cited persistent security challenges and staffing shortages in the Nigeria Police Force. The proposal includes safeguards for human rights, operational standards, accountability and coordination between policing structures. Sent to all 36 state assemblies on September 16, 2026, the bill will proceed to further consideration under the House rules.
