Presidency Targets ₦20bn to Tackle Climate Change in Nigeria’s North-West

Nigeria’s Presidency aims to mobilise about ₦20 billion over four years to address flooding, drought, desertification, migration and other climate pressures in the North-West. At a summit in Abuja, presidential aide Abdullahi Tanko Yakasai described the regional platform as a way to connect state and local governments with development partners, financial institutions and investors. The initiative, implemented with governors’ forums and the North-West Development Commission, includes a climate marketplace, an academy to train 10,000 young people and a fund for climate interventions. Organisers also plan to build on the summit’s discussions to strengthen Nigeria’s position ahead of the forthcoming United Nations climate summit.
