Reps threaten arrest warrants for telecom CEOs

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has threatened arrest warrants for telecommunications executives who failed to honour invitations to explain persistent poor network services. The ad hoc committee, chaired by Olumide Osoba, rejected ALTON’s offer to send its chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, in place of the companies and ordered the heads of MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom, Mafab Communications and other operators to appear on November 4, 2026. Lawmakers are seeking answers about dropped calls, slow internet, failed airtime and data transactions, and inadequate coverage. Citing Section 88 of the 1999 Constitution, they said each operator must account for its services individually.

On October 20, the Court of Appeal in Sokoto dismissed Ya’u’s appeal and upheld the Federal High Court in Gusau’s decision nullifying the disputed primary and ordering a fresh one. In a letter dated October 27, Shinkafi’s lawyer urged INEC to withdraw Ya’u’s name until a new primary is held or the Supreme Court gives a final ruling. Shinkafi said keeping the candidacy in place could prevent the APC from fielding a candidate and jeopardise its participation in the 2027 general elections.
