Salt River Junction: Community naming contest selects name for 970-home development

The planned 970-apartment development on the former Salt River Market site has been named Salt River Junction following a community-led initiative. Communicare unveiled the name at Salt River Hall on October 22; the four joint winners, Beverly Swimmer, Sthandazile Moyo, Tshepo Mooketsi and Munaasira Colbie, will share a R10,000 prize. Launched in August 2026, the contest invited local residents, traders and workers to help shape the identity of the precinct. The mixed-use project is planned to include affordable homes, commercial spaces, public amenities and community facilities while retaining Salt River Heritage Hall.
