Shamonda virus: First human infection ends in death in Lyon; what is known about the risks

A man with a serious illness that had severely weakened his immune system died in Lyon in early October after contracting Shamonda virus, which normally affects cattle. France’s health and agriculture ministries said the brain complications observed before his death were probably linked to the infection, while the ECDC is still investigating whether the virus caused or contributed to his death and how he was infected. The leading theory is that a biting midge infected him in eastern France, where livestock herds had been affected. Authorities say no risk to the general population has been identified so far.

WHO warns of ‘more complex’ Ebola outbreak now present in three African countries

The WHO says the Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak, which emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in mid-May, is becoming more complex, with active or recent cases in the DRC, Kenya and Nigeria. Uganda said she had travelled to eastern DRC before transiting through Uganda, but the WHO and African health authorities said they had no confirmed information about travel to the DRC; the Swiss government believes she contracted the disease in Uganda. The outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people in the DRC, while Uganda, which had cases earlier this year, has been declared Ebola-free.

Idris tasked public media and the National Orientation Agency with sharing verified information, including prevention messages in Nigerian languages and outreach through community, traditional and religious leaders. He urged Nigerians to remain calm, rely on official sources and avoid spreading unverified claims on social media.
