South Africa: the legacy of the Soweto uprising continues to loom

Half a century after the Soweto uprising, little remains in the streets to remind of the bloodshed. At least 176 people were killed when police fired on black students protesting the introduction of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction. Student leader Seth Mazibuko emphasizes that the struggle was against apartheid, particularly in education. The body of 13-year-old Hector Pieterson, photographed by Sam Nzima, became a symbol of apartheid's brutality.

SADITL 2026: A Successful First Edition for the African Digital Transport Fair
