Stroke in Côte d’Ivoire: 30% of victims are young people

Ivorian Health Minister Pierre Dimba said in Abidjan on October 29, 2026, that more than 15,000 people suffer strokes in Côte d’Ivoire each year, with about 30% under the age of 35. Stroke is the country’s leading cause of acquired disability among adults, as well as its second-leading cause of death and third-leading cause of dementia. Neurovascular units have opened at the Cocody and Bouaké university hospitals, emergency hospitals have received scanners, and more than 200 general practitioners have been trained in thrombolysis. The NGO AVC Espoir presented the VITE app, which helps users recognize warning signs and alert emergency services within five seconds.
