Tutankhamun: 104 years later, his treasure still fascinates

Tutankhamun’s funerary mask is on display at the Grand Egyptian Museum, which opened in Cairo last year. Since 2025, the museum near the Giza pyramids has housed more than 5,300 funerary objects from the young pharaoh’s tomb, discovered on November 4, 1922, by British Egyptologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings. The mask stands 54 centimetres tall and contains more than 10.32 kilograms of gold, making it one of the most emblematic pieces in the treasure. Tutankhamun became king at age nine and ruled until his death at around 18 or 19.
