“Unfounded accusations”: Thiès hospital responds to controversy over patient’s death

A social media video accuses staff at Thiès’s El Hadji Amadou Sakhir Ndièguène regional hospital of neglecting a patient who died after complications following a cesarean section. The video’s author says her cousin, from Darou Khoudoss, experienced severe pain after surgery and that an ultrasound in Louga later showed cotton in her uterus. She claims the patient underwent a second operation to remove it and died after further complications; the allegations have not been independently verified. Hospital director Mariama Cissokho disputes the account, says the patient received appropriate care, and announces that the hospital will file a complaint on Monday.

To increase national funding, he called for more efficient spending, stronger domestic revenue mobilization—the region’s tax-to-GDP ratio is below 15%, compared with a recommended 20%—and partnerships with the private sector, development partners and civil society. An additional $81 million in financing for Togo was approved in December 2025.
