United Kingdom: a Somali woman elected to the House of Commons

Sagal Abdi-Wali, born in Somalia and arriving in the UK as a child refugee, was sworn in as a British MP after a by-election in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency in London. She won with 45% of the votes following the resignation of former Prime Minister Keir Starmer. A member of the Labour Party, she has been active in the community as a volunteer, charity administrator, member of two school boards, and a municipal official in Camden, where she has spent much of her life. Her story has generated significant interest among Somali and African communities in Britain.
