U.S. Journalist Sues Kenyan Government Over Alleged Deportation

U.S. freelance journalist Margot Kiser, who was investigating the Shakahola killings linked to preacher Paul Mackenzie, is suing Kenya’s Ministry of Interior and Directorate of Immigration. The International Press Association of East Africa says officers forcibly removed her from her Mombasa home on October 10, 2025, seized her electronic devices and put her on a flight bound for New York; she disembarked in Dubai. After receiving a Class K residency permit, Kiser was denied entry to Kenya on March 8, 2026, and learned she had been declared a prohibited immigrant. She challenges the legality of her removal and denied entry, while the government says her activities threatened national security and the country’s moral fabric, allegations she says were not supported with evidence.
