Bulgarians vote in presidential run-off amid Black Sea tensions

Bulgarians are voting in the presidential run-off after a first round with a record-low turnout of 23 percent. Acting President Iliana Iotova, 61, led former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov, 50, but neither candidate secured an outright victory. The vote comes after drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea, which are feared to have killed about two dozen seafarers and raised concerns about the expanding reach of Russia’s war on Ukraine. Iotova is backed by Prime Minister Rumen Radev, while Gyurov, who supports Ukraine and is backed by pro-Western parties, says Bulgaria should be a reliable NATO ally.

It urged Nigerians to defend democracy and said the alleged actions would not stop the ADC’s political activities.

He said security agencies had been instructed to arrest anyone obstructing legitimate political activities, including Labour Party members. Otti also urged opponents to focus their campaigns on development priorities and consult state performance data rather than rely on personal attacks or issues he said had been addressed.
