West Bank High School reunion marks 20 years since first matric class

Former Westbank High School pupils reunited to mark 20 years since the school’s first matric class graduated in 2006, recalling the friendships and opportunities they gained. Founding principal Christo van der Rheede, who helped establish the school in 2005, described early challenges including attempted break-ins by gangsters and child abuse in the area. He said pupils and staff planted trees and improved the school grounds, helping change the surrounding community’s attitude toward the school. Van der Rheede said the former pupils’ careers and stability show how quality education can improve a community’s prospects.
