In the third quarter of 2025, Nigeria's electricity distribution companies paid 93.04% of their financial obligations to the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, while the government accrued N1.93 trillion in subsidy obligations, paying only N76.95 billion. Consumers have been paying artificially low tariffs for decades, leading to an accumulated debt in the electricity sector exceeding N6 trillion. Experts predict this debt could reach N8.8 trillion by the end of 2026.
