Why Africa has no vaccine for the latest Ebola strain, according to Africa CDC

Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya blamed the lack of international interest for the absence of an approved vaccine against the Bundibugyo Ebola strain and called for greater African investment in vaccine research and manufacturing. An Egyptian manufacturer is conducting clinical trials of a candidate vaccine, while the agency is working with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda on trials and compassionate use of Ervebo, which targets the Zaire strain. The outbreak declared in the DRC in May 2026 has caused more than 9,000 confirmed cases and 4,381 deaths; cases have also been reported in Kenya and Nigeria, which confirmed its first imported case on October 20.

The outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people in the DRC, while Uganda, which had cases earlier this year, has been declared Ebola-free.

Idris tasked public media and the National Orientation Agency with sharing verified information, including prevention messages in Nigerian languages and outreach through community, traditional and religious leaders. He urged Nigerians to remain calm, rely on official sources and avoid spreading unverified claims on social media.
