Civil society urges Treasury to ring-fence funding for GBVF prevention and survivor services

Civil society organisations and gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) advocates are urging National Treasury to earmark funding for prevention and survivor support ahead of Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement. In 2025/26, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate recorded 5,259 cases, including 332 GBVF cases, 116 officer-related rapes and 24 murders; it secured 84 criminal convictions, 26 of them GBVF-related. KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of GBVF cases, at 60, while officer-related rapes rose from 95 the previous year to 116. The South African Police Service recorded 50,511 GBVF cases, of which 30,736 resulted in arrests or referrals to the National Prosecuting Authority.
