Zambian copper train derails in Tanzania, killing two

Fourteen wagons carrying Zambian copper rolled backwards, derailed and overturned in Wang’ing’ombe District, in Tanzania’s southern Njombe region. The Tanzania-Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) train was heading to Dar es Salaam port and had stopped after one of its two engines failed; its brakes reportedly gave way during a shunting operation. Two TAZARA employees guarding the wagons were killed, while four other people were injured, treated at the district hospital and discharged. The tracks were badly damaged and could take a week to restore to operation.
