Growing support for zero-alcohol law as drinking drivers fuel SA’s road carnage

A push to impose a zero blood-alcohol limit on South African motorists is gaining momentum, supported by organized labor and South African Breweries. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy is proposing to amend the law to prohibit any alcohol consumption before driving, in response to a road safety crisis where over 18,000 drivers have been arrested for drunken driving this year. The alcohol industry, represented by SAB, also backs this initiative, stating there should be no ambiguity regarding drinking and driving.
