2027: INEC to audit its systems against repeat of 2023 'technical glitches'

Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on July 16, 2026 a comprehensive audit of its systems ahead of the 2027 general election to prevent a repeat of the technical glitches that plagued the 2023 presidential election. INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan SAN met with UK High Commissioner to Nigeria Richard Montgomery to discuss cooperation on electoral cybersecurity. The commission expressed concerns over disinformation and criminal use of artificial intelligence. Improvements include a self-service online voter registration system and a two-week extension of the final phase of continuous voter registration.
