Rwanda and DR Congo Clash Over the 2030 Formula One Grand Prix

Rwanda plans to host a Formula One Grand Prix in Kigali from 2030, a proposal strongly criticised by DR Congo’s Foreign Minister, Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner. She accused Kigali of seeking to improve the image of President Paul Kagame, whom she described as authoritarian. Rwanda’s Foreign Minister, Olivier Nduhungire, dismissed her remarks and referred to alleged Belgian investigations into President Félix Tshisekedi and his family over money laundering and the plundering of Katanga’s mineral resources. The dispute comes as Kinshasa accuses Kigali of backing the AFC and M23 rebel groups, while former Congolese president Joseph Kabila has said he will join guerrilla movements fighting Tshisekedi.
