Janine Lochrenberg, a 65-year-old former nuclear radiographer, died Tuesday after a shark attacked her while she was swimming with a group at Orient Beach in KuGompo, South Africa. Mike Loewe, who was in the water with her, heard her cry; two swimmers and Loewe’s son brought her ashore, where attempts to revive her were made despite severe injuries to her arm and thigh. Police, called to the scene at about 7 a.m., found that she had died, and swimmers reported seeing a shark’s tail and fin. Several nearby beaches were closed and the public was urged to stay out of the water.

Kinshasa: RGPH-2 census teams generally well received by residents in N'Djili

The mapping operation for the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s second General Population and Housing Census (RGPH-2) has generally been welcomed in N'Djili, one of 24 Kinshasa communes taking part. Census mapping teams will work for a month to collect data for the census planned for 2027, 42 years after the country’s last general census. National Service provides 2,000 desk-benches to 14 public schools in Mbuji-Mayi

On October 19, 2026, the National Service delivered 2,000 desk-benches to 14 public schools in Mbuji-Mayi, in Kasaï-Oriental, benefiting nearly 7,000 pupils. The schools are spread across three sub-divisions of the Kasaï-Oriental 1 educational province. Made by young builders trained at the Kanyama Kasese centre, the benches are intended to improve learning conditions and address shortages of school furniture. Provincial education director Symphorien Kapita and a pupil representative welcomed the donation at a ceremony held at Kashala Bonzola 1 Primary School.
