Syria detains Assad-era general accused of bloody crackdown on protests

Syrian authorities have announced the arrest of former Major-General Mohammed Ali Durgham, accused of participating in the Hama massacre in 1982 and ordering the shooting of unarmed protesters in 2011. Durgham, who was a field commander in the feared Fourth Division of the army, was involved in repression during protests against the regime. This detainment is part of a series of arrests aimed at bringing justice to the victims of Bashar al-Assad's regime.
