Voter Register: INEC to Remove 1.5 Million Irregular Registrations

Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) plans to remove about 1.5 million irregular registrations from the voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections. Chairman Joash Amupitan said in Abuja that technology-enabled verification identified the entries and that the final register is due to be published on December 15, 2026. INEC has approximately 103 million registered voters and is planning a mock exercise to test the BVAS accreditation system and IReV results portal. Amupitan called for UN cooperation against electoral disinformation and violence, while Leonardo Santos Simão said the UN would be present during the elections but would not act as an observer.
