Cameroon: Four dead and 16 seriously injured in an explosion in Douala

An explosion followed by a fire occurred around 7 a.m. Monday at the Metafrique Steel metalworks in Douala’s Bassa industrial zone. Rescuers found four employees dead and took 16 others, who had suffered serious burns, to Douala General Hospital. Littoral Region Governor Samuel Dieudonné Ivaha Diboua criticized the company for failing to follow safety measures prescribed after a previous fire in May and raised the possibility of suspending operations. An investigation has been announced to establish the circumstances of the incident.

The aircraft was flying at 35,000 feet near thunderstorm cells in turbulent, freezing conditions; investigators found signs that it broke apart in midair.
