Reps move to curb sale of fake, substandard food and drinks

Nigeria’s House of Representatives called on the federal government to intensify efforts against the production and sale of fake, adulterated and substandard food and drinks, warning of serious public health risks. The motion was sponsored by Abubakar Yalleman, who represents Madori/Kaugama in Jigawa State, and cited an alcohol counterfeiting syndicate dismantled in Lagos on April 22, 2026, and an illegal fruit juice factory raided in Badagry on September 22. Yalleman warned that counterfeit brands, altered labels and expiry dates, and contaminated ingredients put consumers at risk. He said the practices can cause acute poisoning, cancer and damage to vital organs.
