Nigeria: Eight Soldiers Killed in Landmine Explosion

Eight Nigerian soldiers were killed when their patrol vehicle struck an explosive device in Kinuba, about 25 kilometres from Gamboru in northeastern Nigeria. They were escorting members of an anti-jihadist militia clearing vegetation beside a road; one militiaman was injured. Military sources blamed the attack on Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), although militiaman Ibrahim Liman’s claim that the device was remotely detonated has not been independently confirmed. The blast occurred on the day Army Chief of Staff Waidi Shaibu visited Maiduguri, following an earlier attack that reportedly killed 15 soldiers and five militia members.
