Seydina Limamou Laye died on October 29, 1909, aged 66, after 26 years of religious mission, according to Layene tradition. In Cheikh Makhtar Lô’s account, shortly before dawn on the 14th of Shawwal 1327, he recited the Muslim profession of faith and repeatedly asked what time it was. He reportedly gave his clothes to different people as alms, changing into other garments until his final breath, when the moon was between its zenith and the horizon. His final days were said to have followed a thirteen-day illness.
