South Kivu: polio vaccination campaign postponed to November 19

The South Kivu Provincial Health Division has postponed the polio vaccination campaign in the province’s 34 health zones, initially scheduled for November 12–14. It will now run from November 19 to 21, 2026. Dr. Michel Maneno, acting head of the division, urged parents to have their children vaccinated. Clashes reported in areas including Kabare, Mwenga, Walungu and Fizi are disrupting health workers’ movements; the previous campaign was also postponed twice because of security concerns and difficulties transporting vaccines.

Since Oct. 21, 512 deaths have been reported—335 in communities and 177 in treatment centers—with the WHO concerned about deaths among young children linked to delays in detection and access to care. Switzerland and the United Kingdom medically evacuated confirmed cases involving their citizens; the WHO urged continued regional surveillance and advised against travel or trade restrictions.
