Casualties feared as multi-storey building collapses in Nairobi

A building under construction collapsed on Friday at around 1:40 p.m. on 9th Street in Nairobi’s Eastleigh district, the Kenya Red Cross said, adding that it had sent a team to the scene. Local media reported possible casualties trapped beneath the rubble and looting, while images showed crowds gathered at the site. Reports differed on the building’s height, with some suggesting it may have reached 18 storeys. Densely populated Eastleigh, a residential and market hub, is part of Nairobi’s rapid construction boom.
