Six appointments, 30 jobs out of thousands - PWDs in Niger decry exclusion

Persons with disabilities in Niger State, Nigeria, decry exclusion from political appointments and jobs. Muhammad Abubakar Enagi, Executive Director of the Empowerment Initiative of Persons with Disabilities, says out of about 5,000 political appointments, only six went to PWDs, and out of about 10,000 permanent jobs, only about 30. New Government: What Will Change for Family Security Scholarships

The Prime Minister announced in the Council of Ministers changes to the National Program for Family Security Scholarships, including the digitization of payments by end of 2026 and the rapid settlement of new allocations with first-quarter arrears. The National Unique Register (RNU) now has 996,194 households, of which 57.6% are poor and 42.4% vulnerable. Two bills on social protection and women's economic empowerment will be submitted to Parliament in the second half of 2026.
