93 percent of inmates are State offenders, half don't need jail — Tunji-Ojo

Nigeria's Interior Minister Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo disclosed that 93% of inmates in Nigerian correctional facilities are state offenders, with only 7% for federal offences. He ordered an audit of inmates held for fines and compensation under 500,000 naira, finding over 4,000 such cases. In one day, these inmates were released, reducing prison congestion by 5%. Tunji-Ojo also noted a sharp decline in recidivism under his leadership.
