Catholic Bishop Osorio Citora Afonso, 54, was shot dead at his home in Quelimane, Mozambique, under mysterious circumstances. The police spokesman described it as a 'murder by gunshot'. President Daniel Chapo expressed deep sadness. The bishop was appointed by Pope Leo XIV in July 2025.

EFCC clears air on death of suspected cyber fraudster Michael Sesugh

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied claims that Michael Sesugh, a suspected cyber fraudster, died in its custody. According to spokesman Dele Oyewale, Sesugh escaped on May 4, 2026, with two other suspects by breaking the toilet roof. During a re-arrest attempt on May 21, 2026, in Makurdi, Sesugh and his accomplices opened fire on officers, who returned fire. Sesugh was later found lying in a pool of blood by the roadside and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police are investigating.
