Kenya Railways Launches Special Block Train from Mombasa to Embakasi

Kenya Railways launched the dedicated CMA CGM train service on October 28, 2026, connecting the Port of Mombasa with the Inland Container Depot in Embakasi, Nairobi. The inaugural trip, overseen by Principal Secretary for Transport Mohamed Daghar and French Ambassador to Kenya Wadid Benaabou, carried 108 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). The service, developed with the Kenya Ports Authority and CMA CGM, is intended to streamline container transfers inland and complement existing rail freight operations. Kenya Railways says rail freight can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50 to 67 percent compared with long-distance trucking, while the wider network could reach regional markets including Uganda, South Sudan, Burundi and the DRC.
