DRC: Jean-Pierre Bemba says he inherited a transport sector “facing historic deficits”

Appearing before the Senate on October 16 to answer questions about recurring maritime, aviation, rail and road accidents, Deputy Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Bemba said he had inherited a sector facing “historic deficits.” He cited aging infrastructure, inadequate maintenance and safety equipment, poor links between transport modes, and weaknesses in regulation and governance. In office since June 2024, he says he has pursued modernization, prevention and digitalization under the government’s 2024-2028 transport program. Critics accuse him of focusing on air transport while road and river transport continue to see frequent fatal accidents.
