Hunger in Nigeria Is Now a National Emergency, Peter Obi Says

On World Food Day, Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, called hunger in Nigeria a national emergency. He said the country ranks 117th out of 125 for hunger, down from 109th in 2023, while hunger, poverty and insecurity affect millions of families. Obi lamented that about 60 percent of Nigeria’s fertile arable land remains uncultivated, with some areas providing hideouts for terrorist groups and other non-state actors. He pledged that his leadership would secure the country and provide farmers with targeted grants, subsidies and other support.
