Reps move to tighten rules for EV and CNG vehicle imports

Nigeria’s House of Representatives has called for stricter controls on imports of electric and compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, including local maintenance centres, genuine spare parts and after-sales support. A motion sponsored by Rep. Ademorin Kuye proposes a transparent licensing framework developed by the National Automotive Design and Development Council and other agencies, alongside a public register of approved importers. Importers could be required to train Nigerian technicians, invest in EV charging or CNG refuelling infrastructure, and comply with safety and environmental standards. Rep. Dominic Okafor warned that Nigeria must not become a dumping ground for vehicles that are poorly suited to local needs and lack adequate technical support.
